Fronds is a series of improvised releases recorded in one day, intended to showcase live setups and ideas. Fronds are sketches, and are not heavily edited. This is Fronds #2.

This release was recorded on 30th June 2019, at my mother-in-law's family piano. The piano is ran through a series of effects (mostly distortion, reverb and delay), and into my homemade Python program. In most songs, the piano is barely recognisable as such.

The program is a kind of sequencer that glues together chunks either from the previous few seconds of live audio, or from a fixed time in the session. A beat emerges at the joins of these chunks, a digital artifact that I took advantage of to create a rhythm from otherwise loose and amorphous content. It is a live realization of the ideas behind Mana 5500, from Ephemera Vol. 1 by Tower To The Sea Records. The sequencer lets me define not only the length of a beat, but the number of beats before repetition of the sequence, to sample-level precision, allowing me to create deliberate rhythms through which the piano is filtered. Sometimes the beat is steady; other times it is in a very tight phase, or a hard-panned odd meter bar, or a complex polymeter.
