about

Fronds is a series of improvised releases recorded in one day, intended to showcase live setups and ideas. Fronds are sketches, and are not heavily edited. This is Fronds #1.

This release was improvised and recorded on 21st August 2018. Running my homemade sampler and piano synthesizer out through a broken audio interface, I sent the headphone output through a delay pedal and an EQ/distortion pedal, and back into the interface's instrument input, creating a feedback loop. The album is the interaction between live piano and the noise of various digital components, shaped and exaggerated through the feedback loop, the two effects pedals, and the looper that is forced to sample itself. The setup produced some unexpected results that would be difficult to reproduce, including the cooing on A Slow Colonizer.

Resistant to Deer and Likes Filtered Shade are both explorations of the same piano loop copied many times, playing randomised chunks of each copy. Resistant to Deer keeps the duration of each played chunk roughly equal, in a process similar to Rone and Kötlugos from Smolt. Likes Filtered Shade does not. Layering large amounts of loops allows them to feel like one fluid motion. Soft Shield and Coastal Shield use slow modulation of pitch and speed of the same two-chord phrase as variations of the phasing technique, and creating overtones with the sustain.

I recorded the session with both a handheld dictaphone taking the line output of the interface, and internally within the program. The interface being broken, the line output to the dictaphone adds additional glitching noise that is not present in the internal recorder, creating two recordings of the same material. The dictaphone also includes a compressor. In most tracks I used both recordings simultaneously to add to the variety of textures. I mixed and mastered the album on 25th and 26th August.
